The Wedding Tree by Nina Gates, Oil on Linen, 36" x 48"

This painting is called The Wedding Tree and I included something old, new, borrowed and blue. The massive branch that serves as a background belongs to a gorgeous old Osage Orange tree located on a sprawling Texas ranch, and is much beloved by everyone in the large family. The site of weddings and memorable parties, it is particularly lovely at night dressed to the nines with glowing lanterns. The tree's wide, welcoming branches very much reflect the warmth and legendary hospitality of my client. She is energetic, outdoorsy, ultra-feminine and with a capable spirit I imagine would have done just fine in 1883. She is fun and easy-going, a philanthropist, gardener and bird expert. (Sound on) I keep a photo journal for each portrait that contains my initial thoughts, and inspiration, as well as quick sketches, ideas the client and I discuss and the mood we want to incorporate. It also has references and daily life around the studio. A portrait is an extensive project, so it's fun and amazing to look back and see how it all came together. The music is Something Beautiful by the talented Tim Halperin.
